Words Words Words

Silly person. Take a hint. Among the various blogs I’ve run, they’ve either been too general (personal finance, the fate of the world, etc.), or very specific (life on Whidbey Island), or for one of the books I wrote (Walking Thinking Drinking Across Scotland, Dream Invest Live). My writing deserves more space. This blog is here for my writing and the various activities around it. Here we go.

Hints? How about ~3,000,000 of them? Word count from my books + my blogs + my professional writing equals approximately three million words, and increasing. I handed a new friend my old business card. She pointed out that I should make one that matches the way many people know me; how about Tom the Writer? I took that inspiration to get the URL and build this blog TomTheWriter.net . I’ll keep the other card, too, because that leads into my resume and life as;

“Project Manager / Writer / Author / Photographer / Creative Consultant / Aerospace Engineer / and ever-hopeful Entrepreneur.”

(See LinkedIn, or my bio on my oldest blog for details.)

This is the home for my writing activities. Eight books, with more in production; a screenplay in work; classes in self-publishing and social media management; and paid gigs, which are sometimes ghost gigs so their references are somewhat deferential to the will of those clients.

Today, January 2, 2024, is the committed launch. The site was established a few months ago, but I wanted to wait until a new year before embarking on yet another site. There were four to close down, which helped clear the calendar for this one to fit in.

Three million words are hard to summarize, and I’m certainly not going to do the hard sell on every production. It has taken me 24 years to produce them; their renewed introductions can be given the space they deserve. In the meantime, here’s a link to one page that points to my books so far. It’s on another blog, but will also find a home, here.

That also alludes to the nature of how I work and write: try, improve, try, improve, repeat as necessary. And don’t try to grow a sequoia in a day. My intent is to grow this site as I can, and also in response to what you as a reader want whether as a creator or a consumer.

Books? Got them, as well as their backstories, why some worked better than others, etc.

Classes? My writing career has coincided with the growth in and development of social media and modern self-publishing.

Videos? Yep, got a channel with dozens of videos.

Podcasts? Been there, and about to do it again.

Professional writing? Writing about one thing has led to other things, including an insight into the viability of the Gig Economy.

Hmm. Those look like future pages to build, future posts to write, more reasons for this site, blog, and posts to exist.

But for now, lunch. This project is meant to support me and my projects, not to add hurdles to progress. So, I am going to progress to the kitchen after I post this – and immediately realize there were several other things to do to the site. Planting the seed. Looking forward to the sequoia.

Stay tuned.
